Guided English tour through Ansbach
The Ansbach tourist office is offering a guided tour in English. The very knowledgeable Alexander Biernoth, a local teacher and historian, will take participants around town and talk about more than 1250 years of history, including Baroque style facades and hidden Renaissance inner court yards, the former Markgrave´s Royal Chapel, a crypt with its 25 sarcophaguses and the Baroque Synagogue. The tour starts at the horse sculpture Anscavallo at Schlossplatz (across from the Residenz castle) Saturday, Oct. 14 at 5 p.m. The tour costs 6 euros per person and takes about 90 minutes. Sirens tested in Bavaria
Bavaria is conducting a state-wide test run of its warning sirens Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 11 a.m. The howling sound of the official warning systems is meant to alert the public in case of “immediate danger to public safety” to turn on their radios for announcements, and is tested for functionality once a year.
Mercato dei Sapori in Nürnberg
An Italian “market of flavors” – Mercato dei Sapori – takes place downtown Nürnberg at the Fleischbrücke (near Hauptmarkt) Oct. 12 through 28, offering Italian food and wine specialties.
Kirchweih Heilsbronn
Heilsbronn is celebrating their annual Kirchweih fest Oct. 12 through 16 downtown. Sunday, Oct. 15 is designated as open-shop Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.
Bonjour la France – Erlangen
A French market featuring cheese, sausage ham, wine, pates, crepes, soaps and more products from France is coming to Erlangen Oct. 12 through 15 at Neustädter Kirchenplatz. “Les Saveurs de France” is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. To learn more, visit Les Saveurs de France.
Apfelmarkt in Fürth
The apple market in Fürth in the Stadtpark (Hans-Schiller-Allee) is scheduled for Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors can find out almost everything there is to know about the regional fruit, and sample Franconian dishes and beverages made from apples, pears and more. Experts in tree cutting or basket weaving show off their skills, children are entertained with games and craft projects.
Tour de Castle – Stein
The Faber-Castell castle in Stein is open for visitors every third Sunday of the month from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors can tour the castle and the museum for an admission fee, and enjoy coffee and cake in the enclosed sun room. The next open house is scheduled for Oct. 15; the castle is located on Rednitzstrasse 2a in Stein, on the corner of the B14 road towards Nürnberg. To learn more, visit Castell erleben.
Food Truck Festival – Ansbach
A food truck festival takes place downtown Ansbach Sunday, Oct. 22, at Martin-Luther-Platz from noon to 7 p.m. The food trucks will sell anything from barbecue, burrito, and donuts to Korean and Thai food. To learn more, visit Food trucks.
Halloween Street – Ansbach
Ansbach is hosting a Halloween Street in Neustadt (near Herrieder Tor) Friday, Oct. 27, with activities for children; starting at 1 p.m. kids dressed in a Halloween costume can carve a pumpkin, have their face painted and beg for candy inside the stores. Second Hand Bazaars for Parents
Parents are cleaning out the closets of their ever-growing offspring and take it to numerous “Kinderbasars” or “Baby-Basars” happening in the area. Look for posters or flyers in your community advertising the bazaars for second hand clothing, toys and equipment; usually they take place on a Saturday afternoon in the local church annex, school or community center.
Wochenmarkt Ansbach
The Wochenmarkt Ansbach is a typical German market featuring fresh goods like vegetables, flowers, meats, home-made noodles or ice cream, fresh-baked bread, cheeses and other dairy products. The vendors are often farmers from the area, who sell their own products. They set up their carts and stands on Martin-Luther-Platz twice a week, Wednesday and Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. (except German holidays).

Pumpkin Festival in Ludwigsburg
The annual pumpkin festival on Ludwigsburg’s castle grounds (Marbacher Strasse 10, 71640 Ludwigsburg, Germany) is open now until Nov. 5. Visitors can expect spectacular works of art created from 450 000 pumpkins and gourds, or admire more than 500 variations of the vegetable; this year’s overarching theme is “Rome.” Culinary delights like pumpkin soup, burgers or strudel can be tried on site.
