Fasching, Fastnacht & Karneval – The fifth season is upon us
The Fasching or carnival season is also known as the “fifth season” in Germany. It is a time when Germans loosen up a little, dress up in funny costumes and party for days at a time. Traditional horse market in Niederstetten
The Rossmarkt in Niederstetten Jan. 11 is a horse market with a 172-year-old tradition. Horses of all breeds, carriages and teams are shown and awarded in Niederstetten. After the awards ceremony (9 – 11 a.m.) a show program starts at 11:15 a.m. at Frickentalplatz. A parade with riders and horses begins at Festplatz at 13:30 p.m. To learn more, visit Rossmarkt.


Brothers in Arms – Ansbach
A Dire Straits tribute band, the Brothers in Arms, are playing at the Kammerspiele Ansbach (Maximilianstraße 29) Saturday, Jan. 13 at 8 p.m. To learn more, visit Brothers in arms.


Traditional parade in Hilpoltstein

Wedding Fair in Nürnberg

Tour de Castle – Stein
The Faber-Castell castle in Stein is open for visitors every third Sunday of the month from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors can tour the castle and the museum for an admission fee, and enjoy coffee and cake in the enclosed sun room. The next open house is scheduled for Jan. 21; the castle is located on Rednitzstrasse 2a in Stein, on the corner of the B14 road towards Nürnberg. New Year’s concert in Ansbach

Wochenmarkt Ansbach
The Wochenmarkt Ansbach is a typical German market featuring fresh goods like vegetables, flowers, meats, home-made noodles or ice cream, fresh-baked bread, cheeses and other dairy products. The vendors are often farmers from the area, who sell their own products. They set up their carts and stands on Martin-Luther-Platz twice a week, Wednesday and Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. (except German holidays).


Second hand bazaars for parents
Parents are cleaning out the closets of their ever-growing offspring and take it to numerous “Kinderbasars” or “Baby-Basars” happening in the area this spring. Look for posters or flyers in your community advertising the bazaars for second hand clothing, toys and equipment; usually they take place on a Saturday afternoon in the local church annex, school or community center.
