Ansbach community hosts retirees at annual Retiree Appreciation Day

Ansbach, Germany (Oct. 17, 2018)  – The annual Retiree Appreciation Day (RAD) for USAG Ansbach took place Wednesday, Oct. 17 at the Von Steuben Community Center on Bismarck Kaserne. The annual event is designed to support  retirees – both active duty and civilian retirees – as well as spouses and widows of retirees, who are living in Ansbach and surrounding communities.  Participants were able to learn about changes in their retirement rights, benefits and privileges, and take advantage of on-the-spot services. New this year was a visit of a representative from the Federal Benefit Unit of the U.S. Consulate in Frankfurt.

Offered at the beginning of the event was a presentation of several representatives of retiree organizations, like the local retiree council or the Army in Europe Retired Soldier Council (AERSC), with special guest speaker Maria Bentinck, the deputy director of Retirement Services in the Pentagon. Bentinck explained in detail benefits and changes in services for retirees.

The garrison commander, Col. Steven M. Pierce, welcomed the attendees in his opening remarks: “On behalf of United States Army Garrison Ansbach, I would like to welcome everyone to this event, the 2018 Retiree Appreciation Day, or as we like to call it, the RAD. USAG Ansbach has a retired population of approximately 1400 Retirees from all branches of service. Of those, we actively support about 900 in our footprint. I know some of you travel many miles to be here, and many of you who live in the local area, welcome, thanks for being here.”

After the opening presentations, representatives of many different organizations were available at their stations to individually advise the customers. Presenting organizations included the Health & Dental Clinic, TRICARE, Foreign Medical Program, Veterans Affairs, Legal Services & Customs, Defense Finance and Accounting Services (DFAS), Banking Facilities, U.S. Consulate Munich, Federal Benefit Unit – U.S. Consulate Frankfurt, FMWR & Army Community Service, Retiree Council Europe, VFW & American Legion, Local Retiree Council and the American Red Cross.
